We install two species. Both are quality materials; they suit different priorities and budgets.

Western red cedar

Cedar contains natural oils that resist moisture, insects, and decay without chemical treatment, which helps in the humid conditions along the lakeshore and across Kent, Ottawa, and Kalamazoo counties. It can be stained or painted right after installation, and left unfinished it weathers to a silver-gray patina.

Pressure-treated pine

Treated pine is our standard option. It is infused during manufacturing to resist rot, fungal decay, and ground-contact moisture, and it is a cost-effective choice that performs reliably long term. It needs about three months to weather before staining or painting.

Finishing your fence

We do not stain or paint fences, but both species can be finished. Apply stain or paint when outside temperatures are 60 degrees or warmer. For upkeep, see our wood fence maintenance tips.

Wood fence styles

Privacy fence: Tight pickets, typically 6 to 8 feet, for backyards, pool areas, and lots near busy roads.
Shadowbox (board on board): Pickets alternate sides of the rail. It still gives significant privacy, lets air through to reduce wind load on open lots, and looks the same from both sides of a shared property line.
Picket fence: Usually 3 to 4 feet for front yards, gardens, and boundaries, and one of the most cost-effective residential options.
Split rail: Rough-cut rails through notched posts for larger lots and a natural look. It marks the boundary without blocking the view.

What is the difference between cedar and pressure-treated wood?

How deep are wood fence posts set in Michigan?

Posts are set below the frost line to prevent heaving in freeze-thaw cycles, typically 42 to 48 inches in most of West Michigan. We set all posts in concrete at the correct depth for your soil and location.

Can a wood fence be stained or painted?

Yes. Cedar can be finished right after installation. Treated pine needs about three months to weather first. Apply stain or paint at 60 degrees or warmer. We do not stain or paint, but we are glad to advise on timing.
