4 Helpful Fencing Tips
The best thing a homeowner can do when considering fencing options is hire professionals from a reputable fencing company to get the new fence installed. Still, there are a few tips that everyone involved should keep in mind:
- Check on permitting rules and regulations. You likely will not need to obtain a permit for your fence installation, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Always obtain up-to-date building codes from your local municipality before building begins.
- Know your property lines. Ensure your property lines are clearly defined, and make sure you and the team from your fence company are aware of any bylaws that might restrict a fence’s height or appearance. Even if you are replacing a previous fence, check the property lines again — don’t assume the old fence was installed in the correct space. Mark your fence about six inches from within your property line, as this allows enough space to accommodate the post and fence structure; a little less space is needed if you are installing a chain link fence or a metal fence.
- Call 811. Do your homework and dial 811 before you dig to ensure all of your underground utility lines are clearly marked.
- Check for slopes or elevated ground. These things could affect your fence installation and layout, which might impact costs and timing. If you discover minor sloping, a racked fence — or one in which the rail remains parallel to the ground in all panels — should work fine. For steeper slopes, your fence will likely require a stepped-fence format.
