Repair vs. Replace: Which option is best for you?
When fencing starts to look old and worn, a common quandary among homeowners is whether to repair or replace. At Fence Consultants of West Michigan, we try to save our clients’ time and money by suggesting repairs whenever possible. Determining the best course of action for you depends on what type of fence you have.
- A wood fence can sustain damage from inclement weather, insects, and moisture in the air. If you notice warping, splintering, or discoloration, assess the situation to see if you can lessen the damage; you may have to exterminate wood or redirect pooling water. Patching small holes and cracks with putty or wood filler can sometimes take care of the problem. However, if the damage is more severe, you can replace individual wood fence panels.
- Vinyl fencing typically requires much less maintenance. However, damage can occur if your fence is hit by large pieces of debris, equipment, or heavy snow. If you notice a crack in any of your vinyl fence panels, it’s best to replace them.
- An aluminum fence is also very durable, but sometimes parts may need replacement. Repairing the damage on an aluminum fence will require replacing a section or an individual rail, but an experienced welder or fence company can help.
If any of these repair options seem cumbersome, you can always fully replace your fence or install a new one.
